B. Determine the Grinding Chamber Volume

Model Description:

Taking the laboratory rolling ball mill as an example, such as QM-5L, QM represents the letter code of the rolling ball mill, and 5L indicates the volume size. The material that can be loaded is one-third of the volume size, thus QM-5L can load materials of 5x1/3=1.67L. The volume of the loaded material multiplied by the material's bulk density gives the weight of the loaded material. If the bulk density of the material is 2Kg/L, then it can load 1.67L x 2kg/L = 3.34kg, meaning that QM-5L can load 3.34kg of material with a bulk density of 2Kg/L.

C. Determine the Material of the Grinding Jar and the Configuration of the Grinding Balls

The grinding principle of the ball mill determines that the material will be mixed with a small amount of wear from the grinding jar and grinding balls during the grinding process, which may introduce impurities into the milled material. Choosing the appropriate material for the grinding jar and grinding balls can reduce or avoid impurity contamination. Generally, we select the appropriate jars based on the material composition and its requirements for impurities.
① Choose jars and grinding balls with the same material as the milled material (composition). For example, when grinding iron ore, the main component is iron, so stainless steel jars can be chosen as grinding jars, and stainless steel balls as grinding balls.
② Choose jars and grinding balls that have negligible wear and are extremely wear-resistant, such as zirconia jars and zirconia balls, agate jars and agate balls, etc.
③ For certain materials that will undergo high-temperature sintering treatment after grinding, choose nylon jars, polyurethane jars, and other materials that cannot fully decompose at high temperatures.

D. Finally, Confirm Any Special Requirements You May Have

For general material grinding, grinding under normal temperature, normal pressure, and air environment is sufficient. However, some special materials have specific requirements for grinding conditions:
① Some materials will react with oxygen in the air during the grinding process. In this case, a vacuum jar should be used, vacuum pumped, and filled with inert protective gas.
② Some materials generate significant heat during grinding, and if they change properties at high temperatures, cooling treatment is needed when the grinding temperature becomes too high. Common cooling solutions include water cooling, air cooling, or liquid ammonia cooling.
③ Some materials need to be ground in a high-temperature environment, and heating can generally be achieved through water bath heating, oil bath heating, or direct electric heating.
